David Simmons
Grade: 3
Inspired by carnivals, renaissance fairs, and those creepy circuses that roll into town at midnight, Harlequins spins a world of mischief and color. Set in 4/4 in the key of E minor, the piece leaps between a bold opening theme and a more lyrical idea in E major, with melodies tossed eagerly among every part. The violins stay comfortably in first position and the bowings are thoughtfully planned, making the music friendly to play—but don’t relax too much, because harlequins are always ready with a trick. With its playful back‑and‑forth and its need for strong ensemble teamwork, this piece brings a burst of whimsical energy to any concert program.
